Thanks to the heroic efforts of Jessalyn Ortega, 4th grade teacher at Taft Elementary School, and Julie Chapman, recently retired Sign Language Interpreter at Taft, occupants of a burning vehicle are alive today. Ortega and Chapman were passing by an accident on Sunday, December 13, 2015, when they noticed that occupants were still inside the car.  According to the Deputies who responded, the victims in the accident would not have survived if Ortega and Chapman had not intervened. Their principal, Steve Longacre, said, “SAUSD staff members do miracles on a daily basis while at work, but they also do incredible things outside of work.  They are truly, ‘I am SAUSD’ employees!”
